GLASTONBABY 2017

Whether you’ve been getting glittered up or just glued to the coverage over the last weekend, Glastonbury fever took over. Aaahh freak out!

FLAGS WEST HOLTS STAGE QUITE CONTRARY STYLE

The weather was hot and the music was on fire! I thought my eyes had fallen out of my head, but no – it was just Katy Perry’s eyeball dancers, rolling around the pyramid stage. In an insanely enviable, crystal catsuit –

She is my Queen!!!

It was a trippy, euphoric, sing-along mash up – exactly what a festival should be.

It hasn’t quite hit me yet that I’m no longer in the beautiful, hippy paradise which is Pilton Farm. I’m still buzzing and playing the coverage back non-stop. Must ride the waves in my earphones forever…

For everyone that was there, and for those of you that weren’t – here’s my favourite throwback moments from the weekend.

TOO HOT TO HANDLE

8am Wednesday – fresh off the coach from Manchester; OK, less than fresh, and stiff from attempting about 100 different sleeping positions, but so happy to have made it! After busting an awkward body roll over a queue barrier, we successfully beat the long queue, and within 20 minutes had our wristbands on.

The quest across the site to meet our friends was intense. Temperatures soared; weighed down with epic amounts of booze & clothes, it felt like a BBC 3 SAS boot camp survival challenge. I may have done some mild whinging…

Eventually we made it – cheered on by stewards, and arriving to a great spot in the field next to Arcadia. The world’s only loveable spider.

INSTRUMENTAL SNOOZE

After a wrestle with the tents and stripping off to as little clothes as possible, we went to explore. Temperatures now at 32° – we headed to the Greenfields area for a nap in a hippy tent. Curled up with loads of random cool instruments; tambourines and pan pipes for pillows, it was weirdly snug. I woke up confused; seeing loads more limbs of people sprawled next to us, and was greeted with a lemonade ice lolly. MMMM YEAH

I LOVE LAMP

I think I can safely speak for my friend Lundy, when I say his birthday reached peak when he was sung to by a talking lamppost near to the circus tent. “Happppy Birthdaaaay-I-don’t-know-what-your-name-is!!”

QUITE CONTRARY ON TOUR

I was proud to see that a homage to my bedroom had been built in the south east corner near to the Truth stage. An even bigger pile of clothes than I think-even-I-could ever achieve. I wonder how the statue makes it to their ensuite?!…

WORLD’S BIGGEST PEACE SIGN

Thursday breakfast = a can of Cider on the way to the stone circle field; Energy to attempt forming the world’s biggest peace sign. It felt amazing to be part of the huge crowd, about 15,000 people had marched up to the sacred field overlooking the festival, standing together to spread love not hate.

“I’M ENGAGED!!”

The best phone call ever came from my friend Gem. Her fiancé TJ took her up to the Ribbon rainbow tower next to the Park Stage, overlooking the whole festival, to get down on one knee.  My response went something like: “Whaaaaaaaaa??!!!!” Cannot compute!!! We ran up to meet them and danced around to Manchester classics.

Could Glastonbury get any better??!

STONE CIRCLE

Thursday night – was a journey into Middle Earth – sat next to someone in a tipi-bar that I was convinced was Gandalf’s younger brother. (He had clearly borrowed his robes..) We drank shots of the most potent – homegrown peach flavoured alcohol, before climbing the hill to sit next to camp fires above the stone circle. The trees were lit with an eerie-awesome-green, and I had a camel back filled with more rum than Jack Sparrow’s wildest dreams. We watched the sunrise, hugging each other, only looking away from the sky to spy on some people urinating on one another in the trees…it didn’t take any of the magic away!

KATE TEMPEST

WOW. Kate blasted out bars beyond anything I expected to hear at Glastonbury. Taking on social injustice; racism, marginalization in every aspect of society, before the ultimate take down of Therasa May. In every direction we saw people standing in silence, captivated by her every word; inspiration for the nation. We saw her later in the bar next to the Glade, and told her how amazing she was. She smiled gratefully, putting her hands together, bowing them to us – WHAT A WOMAN.

ARCADIA METAMORPHOSIS

Catching the end of Dusky’s set on Friday we saw dancers drop from the spider legs and fire spurt out of the beat-beast that is Arcadia!!! The famous fire blasted out from each angle; feeling like complete sardines in the rush of people, but it had to be seen.

OHHH JEREMY-CORBYN- OHHH JEREMY-CORBYN

The chant became so popular around the site it felt like I was waking up chanting his name. Keen to see him introducing Run the Jewels, we ran down to the pyramid stage. He did not disappoint…a few tears were had! Although at one point he felt dangerously close to entering school of rock-Jack-Black-territory, “I BELIEVE CHILDREN ARE THE FUTURE..”

Nevertheless his words felt incredibly sincere, inspiring, and his hopes for what should be – a fairer world, where nobody has to sleep on the street, and we look after one another; to build bridges, not walls – “Looking at you Mr Trump”. It was everything I’ve ever wanted politics to be, and what he says is really about “everyday life”; being kind to one another.

I had no idea what a huge Katy Perry fan I was until I was dancing around, like a plastic bag; California girl, A-L-I-E-N, extra-terrestrial, SWISH, SWISH, BISH, Another one in the basket!

NADIA ROSE

From one girl-crush-to-another, Nadia Rose got everyone going crazy. Her set was so much fun – dipping in and out of Daniel Beddingfield-“I GOTTA GET THROUGH THIS” it has to be watched again and again #SKWOD -I’m also extremely happy to have made the BBC coverage for this set…

STORMZY’S MUM

The award to the cutest-most-sweary-rapper has to go to Stormzy. His mum must have been off-the-scale-proud, as he packed out the Other Stage, getting everyone going crazy, “YOU’RE NEVER TOO BIG FOR ADELE!”

OUR INFLATABLE CAR

4AM VIBES – You know when you can’t remember where you’ve parked your stolen inflatable car? Then you have to walk around the whole of shangri la to find it….and the stewards mislead you around their confusing one-way-system, and no one seemed to understand, “Where’s dead babies??” – The creepy-chucky-style-larger-than-life-babies which decorated the Unfairground area.

Yeah. Luckily we found the car! Then drove it to the stone circle before witnessing about 10 stewards rumble some fence jumpers – which was extremely sobering…time for bed!

RAG’N’BONE MAN

Thank god for sunglasses so no one could see me bawling like a baby when he played- Skin!

“WHEN I HEARD THAT SOUND, WHEN THE WALLS CAME DOWN, I WAS THINKING ABOUT YOU”

It may have been a rum hangover…but it was also one of the most amazing voices I’ve ever heard live..

STAYIN’ ALIVE

Barry Gibb’s vocal chords kicked off Sunday Funday, in true shrill style. I was instantly transported back to my Gran’s house, throwing some shapes to Saturday Night Fever!

MY NAME IS JACK BAUER

AKA Kiefer Sutherland…24 legend!!! When does he ever sleep??? He is unbelievably american, in case you were wondering.. In the most american setting – the Avalon Field, he played drinking songs and told us about one summer where he and his twin sister to have the best time ever with their Dad – Donald Sutherland; no rules or regulations – just pure fun, listening to Bob Dylan, “KNOCK KNOCK KNOCKIN ON HEAVEN’S DOOR”, on repeat on his 1966 red ferrari.

GET LUCKY

I wanted to see Chic – but I had no idea how lucky I would feel – to hear all of their hits-which-I-didn’t-even-know-were-their-hits, that legendary Nile Rodgers has written, blasting out in the sun, “WE ARE FAMILY, I GOT ALL MY SISTERS WITH ME”

Having been triumphant over an aggressive cancer battle – there he was, the godfather of music with 400 million-records-sold, telling us how he was up all night to get lucky!

SAMPHA

I was too tired to stand, so we just collapsed and lay back on the grass to let Sampha soothe our souls with his soulful tones at the Park Stage. Perfect Sunday sounds.

JUSTICE

My favourite Frenchmen took over the West Holts stage on Sunday night. Not much can beat singing, “WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS, WE’LL NEVER BE ALONE AGAIN”, with your friends – at the headline closing act of Glastonbury.

DANCIN’ IN THE TUBE LIGHT

This is how I want to commute from now on. If only all undergrounds / trams were portals into a rave. It only got better when we saw some real life glitter-disco-tits waiting in the queue!!

NYC DOWNLOW

A literal “Angel” saved us from the epic queues which snake around the wire fences to NYC Downlow. We had wanted to go in all weekend…but only made it as far as dancing outside the spectacle, laser-show, outside stage – GenonysDrag queens serenaded the crowds, and fake meat hangs from the edges of the building whilst techno pumps out into the yard filled with people chilling from the heat of the club. By far the best late night venue in Shangri La!
